Music Monday

I'm sure you've heard Hozier's song "Take Me To Church," which is beautiful but sadly overplayed.  Did you know the rest of his album is just as beautiful? I listen to Cherry Wine at least once a day (ok just kidding, like 3 times a day...)

Have you heard of Nathaniel Rateliff? Because he's wonderful and you should definitely go listen to him.

Craft Drinks and Hippies

Dan and I got to hang out with our wonderful friend Alli a few weeks ago when she came to town. We spent the evening drinking crafty drinks at House of Loom.

After some libations, we headed to the Slowdown for Shpongle. It was an 18 and over show, which just reminded me what the youth these days are like and made me feel old. But it was a great show and wonderful night, so no complaints here.

I love when great friends come home to visit, especially when they do it on the fly and it's just a surprise. You walk into a friend's house or a bar, and all of a sudden this familiar face pops up in front of you for a hug. So many friends have moved to great cities all over the world, but they can come home and pick up exactly where they left off. They can just show up, everyone freaks out, and then we have a blast. I guess what I'm saying is my friends are awesome and I love you all. Take more random trips to Omaha so we can freak out over you and I can post pictures of it. Thanks.

Nate's Show

My friend Nate had a show a few weeks (months?) ago in Lincoln, and we went to check him out.  Olive ran the show, again.  Nate was alright, too :)

The Faint

A while back the Faint played a few shows in Omaha, and I was lucky enough to catch one!  What a fantastic show.  It was a sweaty mess of dancing and laughing and smiling the whole time.

Music Monday: Keaton Henson

I signed up for Spotify a few months back, because I hate having buyer's remorse with music and I'm always looking for new stuff.  I love me some Bon Iver during work, something relaxing for background music.  Anyway, I clicked on the handy dandy "Similar Artists" button today and discovered Keaton Henson.

His voice is so strange and ethereal, it seems like something out of a dream.  Good stuff.  Hope you enjoy!

Music Monday Revived

Have you ever heard of Cloud Cult?  I heard of them a long time ago, but didn't really pay attention to them until I heard an NPR story about them a year ago.  The article focused on their (then) new album, and how their personal lives and tragedy had played into their songs.  The lead singer's two year old son died in his sleep one night, and the singer used songwriting to cope.

The last thing that he said in the story really struck me, and it's stayed with me all this time.  Probably because I was nearing the one year anniversary of my father's death.

He had become enthralled with the science behind death, and thermodynamics.  He said, "Basically, what it says is that energy cannot be destroyed; it can only be transformed.  So any kind of energy that you put out there never goes away. Everything that we did together, every moment that we had together, everything that he felt and everything that I felt for him still resonates out there in the universe. And I refuse to believe anything less than the idea that I'll somehow be with my son again."

I feel the same about my dad.  I just would never have been able to put it into such eloquent words.  Reading them still brings tears to my eyes.  But I am thankful that someone put words to my thoughts.

Music Monday

Right now I am looking outside a second floor window at budding trees and blue skies, and all I can do is hope that this week goes by fast!  I have one more test and a few more papers to write, then I am free as a bird (at least until bar prep starts)!  So I will just say a quick hello and leave you with one of my favorite artists: Regina Spektor.  Her voice is so unique, and her songs are blissful, uplifting and just resonate with me.  I hope you enjoy and have a great week!!

Music Monday

Ed Sheeran is another one of those CDs that is on repeat in my car (yes I still have a CD player).  Some of his stuff is a little out there, but he has such an amazing voice and he's a fantastic lyricist.  This video is so creative too!

Now, I'm off to learn.  If I can make it through this week, I think I'll be alright!  Happy Monday everyone!

Music Monday

Have you ever seen a music suggestion on iTunes or by a friend and never taken their advice?  Or seen an album cover a bunch, but just never checked the music out because you thought it was something completely different than it was?  That was me with The Civil Wars.  I mean, with a band name that includes "war," I definitely never thought it would be my cup of tea.  And dear lord, was I missing out!

Their sound is so beautiful, so capturing, I listened to this album on repeat for days!  They have a surprising back story, meeting randomly at a songwriting workshop.  They went on hiatus for a while (so disappointing!) but I think they will be coming back with a vengeance soon.  So check out the stuff they have out now, and stay tuned for more!

Music Monday

I really love when a movie has a good soundtrack.  One of my favorites is the Hunger Games soundtrack.  None of the music on the soundtrack was in the movie, but I read that they picked songs that embodied the district that Katniss (the main character, for those of you who are unaware) was from.  The songs are very earthy and folksy.  If you haven't checked it out, I would definitely recommend it.

One of the bands I discovered on there is The Low Anthem.  They're music is very diverse, ranging from soft melodies to a bit more rock.  But they are quite fantastic to relax to.  Enjoy!

Music Monday

Happy Monday!  You know, when April started a week ago, I had illusions of grandeur about how much I was going to get done this month, and I was finally going to be really prepared for all my finals and I was not going to be stressed!  That, of course, is not my style.  I am a massive procrastinator, and one week in I am already stressing about how little I've done and how much I still have to do!  Oh, jeez.  At least this is (hopefully) the last time I will be putting myself through this school stress.  In one month, I will be graduating from law school!

For today's Music Monday, I bring you the greatness that is Ben Gibbard.  I'm sure you've heard some of his stuff with Death Cab for Cutie, but he also had a lesser known band called The Postal Service.  Both are wonderful in their own rite, so I decided to provide you with both today.

Grapevine Fires was written about the terrible fires that so much of California experienced a few years back.  I think the song is so beautiful with the message that it portrays as well as the tune it carries.  There is beauty in everything, if only we look for it.

Music Monday

Happy Monday, everyone!  And welcome to April!  Hopefully Spring will decide to stick around from a while this time.  I'm really in need of some nice weather.  Yesterday was great, and the April Fool's set in and it snowed last night.  Boo!  As much as I'm looking forward to the warmer weather, April is not looking great for me.  This is my last semester of law school, and I of course have been procrastinating as usual.  So this month will be filled with outlining, paper-writing, and learning all the stuff I haven't yet attempted to learn.

I have a lot of great family events coming up this month as well, such as my brother's art exhibit and my aunt's 70th birthday, so it should break things up a bit, but I am still looking forward to April being over!

Just in case any of you are in the same boat and have a stressful April staring you in the face, I thought we should have a fun video today.  Hope this brightens your day!

Enjoy!

Music Monday

Happy Monday!  In honor of the Supreme Court's review of human rights this week, I give you Macklemore and Mary Lambert's "Same Love," a beautifully worded and wonderful song, in my opinion.

Music Monday

Happy Monday!  I know sometimes they can be rough, but I think that if you listen to the song below, it might make your day a little better.  I know it always puts a smile on my face!!  :)

And if you've never listened to Noah Gundersen before, I would thoroughly recommend checking him out!  He's fantastically wonderful, I promise.

What I'm Listening To

I love Bon Iver.  His music is so peaceful and calming.  Have you heard the cover of Skinny Love by Birdy?  I'm quite infatuated with this song...I could literally listen to it five times a day!  And can you believe she is only 16?!  So jealous!
